Winter Injury to Ryegrass a Potential Threat?

It goes without saying that this past week has been cold! In the northeastern United States the cold weather could potentially kill perennial ryegrass. Perennial ryegrass is not as tolerant of freeze injury as Kentucky bluegrass. Those areas that have had no or intermittent snow cover are most susceptible. One reason that perennial ryegrass is potentially more susceptible to winter injury is that the crown of the plant is longer than Kentucky bluegrass, which increases the potential of the crown to be exposed to inclement weather.
