How to guarantee your fire ant control this fall

By Lane Tredway, Ph.D., technical services manager for Syngenta

Fire ant activity often peaks in late summer and fall when soil temperature and moisture are more moderate and conducive to their activity on the surface. This increases the risk of painful stings during a popular time for outdoor activities. Advion® fire ant bait is an effective option for preventive management or rapid control of existing mounds.

Extraordinary speed to control existing mounds

With traditional fire ant baits, you have to choose between fast activity (with the probability that colonies will re-emerge) or complete colony control that could take weeks to kick in. Advion fire ant bait:

  • Controls foraging worker ants within 24-48 hours
  • Provides total colony control within 72 hours
  • Has an unmatched speed of control compared to other fire ant baits
  • Is effective with a broadcast application (1.5 lbs./A) or individual mound treatments (4 tbsp./mound)

No other fire ant bait on the market compares to the speed of control with Advion fire ant bait.

David Sullivan, owner of Roach Coach, Inc. in Perry, Florida, used Advion fire ant bait to control fire ants in a few days before a festival. He said of his experience:

  • "With the way you spread Advion fire ant bait, the ants do all the work. They forage and take it back to wherever their hidden nest may be."
  • "With other products I've used, if you miss a mound, you still have ants."

The festival grounds were clear from fire ants within 48 hours, providing a comfortable environment for attendees.

Season-long prevention with two applications

For season-long control with the Advion Fire Ant Bait Guarantee Program, don’t forget to make a second application at 1.5 lbs./A in early- to mid-September for most areas.

These time lapse images show just how fast Advion fire ant bait can provide fire ant control. In just 72 hours, Advion fire ant bait achieved full colony control. Photos courtesy of Charles Barr, Barr Research and Consulting, College Station, TX.
