Many integrated pest management (IPM) programs strategically employ chemical and biological tools to prevent or reduce insect populations to acceptable levels. Successful programs are well thought-out, preventive and customized to fit your operation's needs. By coordinating cultural, biological and chemical tactics, you can better maintain or reduce insect populations to acceptable levels.
Compatibility is Key
IPM programs, including ones that incorporate BCAs, are best used preventively, so understanding your crop and potential pest pressure is critical for success. First, gather historical data on the insects, diseases and resistance issues you may encounter in your operation. Then, ensure the compatibility of your treatments. To help make sure you are choosing the right products, the following insecticides and BCAs have been tested to help you avoid trial and error.
IPM Programs and Endeavor Insecticide
Endeavor insecticide is an ideal tool for IPM programs as it is highly compatible with beneficial mites, insects and other BCAs. Powered by the active ingredient pymetrozine, Endeavor provides residual control by quickly inhibiting feeding of the target insect. Endeavor is a proven IPM partner for controlling whiteflies and aphids.
Aphid Control | Aphidius colemani Aphidius ervii Aphelinus abdominalis | 26-50% Reduction |
Aphidoletes aphidimyza | 0-25% Reduction |
Whitefly Control | Amblyseius swirskii | 0-25% Reduction |
Encarsia formosa | 0-25% Reduction |
Eretmocerus eremicus | 0-25% Reduction |
The Importance of Rotation
Another key component of a successful IPM program is rotating products with different IRAC codes to minimize the onset of resistance. Products with similar modes of action can result in cross resistance and a reduction in chemical efficacy. For example, if your target pest is aphids, you can rotate Mainspring GNL insecticide in IRAC group 28 with Endeavor in IRAC group 9B. A program with unique modes of action and compatible BCAs will help prevent insect populations from developing resistance and building in your operation.
