Winter Play this Weekend?

With a temperature warm up expected later this week and a subsequent snow melt, some golfers will be clamoring to get out on the golf course.   Winter play is always a concern when temperatures rise.  You do need to be cognitive of the various conditions and potential for injury.  If the turf/soil is not frozen and relatively dry (firm) winter play can occur with minimal immediate damage to the turf.  Should the soil be frozen and frost is not present golf can occur with little detriment.   If however the turf is frozen but thawing occurs at the soil surface, the potential for injury is great.  A thawed surface over a frozen soil can result in the turf plants be sheared off by golfer traffic and hitting golf shots.  The turf will not recover from this injury.
